What is constipation?

Constipation is a common, often deeply uncomfortable digestive condition that shifts how your bowel works. When you have constipation, your large intestine absorbs too much water from your waste. The stool dries out, turns hard, and becomes stubborn. This makes it difficult to pass and leaves you feeling blocked, heavy, and bloated.

Constipation strikes at any age. Many people fight it from time to time after a change in routine, while others struggle with it as a daily, chronic issue.

Symptoms of constipation

Constipation symptoms come and go, and they hit with different strengths. Common signs include passing stool fewer than three times a week, straining heavily on the toilet, passing small, hard lumps, and feeling a persistent, aching bloat in your stomach.

Sometimes the blockage builds up fast and causes real harm. A severely impacted bowel leaves no room for anything to pass. If your stomach swells up hard, you suffer sharp, unyielding abdominal pain, you cannot stop vomiting, or you see blood in your stool, the blockage may be dangerous. You must seek medical help straight away to clear it.

What triggers constipation?

We do not always know exactly what causes a sudden bout of constipation, but it is often tied directly to your daily habits. Things you eat, drink, or even how much you move usually spark the symptoms.

Common triggers include a diet terribly low in fibre, not drinking nearly enough water, ignoring the urge to go when you feel it, starting new medications (like certain painkillers or iron pills), sitting for too many hours a day, and high emotional stress.

Managing constipation and using bowel treatments

Occasional constipation happens to everyone, but you can manage it well and take back your comfort if you stick to a steady routine. The secret to winning the fight is making simple changes to your diet and using the right treatments the right way when your system stalls.

Most plans to fight stubborn constipation rely on two main types of laxatives.

First, you might use a bulk-forming laxative or stool softener. You take this to help your stool hold onto water. It acts like a sponge, making the stool softer, larger, and much easier for your body to move naturally.

Second, if the bowel is entirely stalled, you use a stimulant or osmotic laxative to break the flare-up. These treatments dive in to either draw a rush of water into the bowel or directly wake up the nerves in your gut, forcing the muscles to squeeze and push the blockage out fast.

*Subject to pharmacist approval.

To start treatment, you’ll complete a short online consultation so our pharmacists can understand your needs. A pharmacist will review your answers and confirm if treatment is suitable.

What is the online clinic?

The online clinic lets you request prescription treatments through a secure online consultation. A clinician reviews your information and decides if treatment is suitable.

How does the online consultation work?

You complete a short questionnaire about your health, symptoms, and any medicines you take. There’s no live appointment. A clinician reviews your answers and follows up if needed.

Do I need to speak to someone on a call or video?

No. The service is asynchronous, meaning your consultation is reviewed without a live call. This lets you complete it at a time that suits you.

Who reviews my consultation?

Your consultation is reviewed by a qualified pharmacist following clinical guidelines.

How long does it take to get a decision?

Review times can vary. You’ll be contacted if more information is needed or once a decision has been made.
